For Danish photographer Jens Juul (b. 1963), visiting the hairdresser is an unusual moment of shared intimacy with a stranger. We charge the hairdresser with the responsibility not only of washing and drying our hair, but coming very close with scissors or even a razor. By the time we leave, they have adjusted our appearance, essentially modifying the way that the world is able to ascertain various qualities of our person: our beauty, strength, eroticism, individuality, sensuality, masculinity or femininity. Yet it’s the visit itself that intrigued Juul. A visit to the hairdresser is an exposure, a disrobing of pretence and put-on glamour. Juul’s process doesn’t portray the ideal, but rather, the effort involved in the making of the ideal.
