A JOURNEY IN REVERSE DIRECTION
CREDITS
Urban development can be like amnesia for cities. The destruction of old buildings can be like memories being erased only to be replaced by the new histories of concrete and glass. In Zhu Lan Qing’s home town of Dongshan Island she attempts to fight this amnesia with her camera. Taking fragments of the town and recompiling them into a photographic archive. The series begins with a simple image but layered in history and meaning. A simple self-portrait in which the artist wears the clothes of her grandmother, revives long lost and forgotten memories, with the new and the young at its heart.
