Inspired by “things that aren’t real”, Connecticut-based Samantha Sealy (b. 1991) creates meaning through ‘destructive processes’ until she built a world she felt reflected her own. The result is rather surreal and ghostly, with a definite gothic edge to it that seemingly reflects Sealy’s outlook on the world.
A self-confessed outsider, Sealy found solace in the darkroom, a place she “could be alone in and relax whilst also being productive”, and so analogue processes became a mainstay of her work. Working in a way beyond photography, Sealy affects her images by damaging the negatives, engaging in a simultaneous act of creation and destruction.
