It’s almost as if photographers go into collective hibernation during the summer. Newspapers and magazines contain hardly any new or surprising photos, and there’s scarcely a photography exhibition to enter into your diary. With one exception; Koos Breukel’s Among Photographers. Breukel, who together with Rineke Dijkstra is considered the best portrait photographer in the Netherland, is showing his classic-looking portraits of fellow photographers, each paired with a single photo from their oeuvres. There were also a number of photography awards handed out before the calm of summer. And not just any awards. Vivianne Sassen won the Prix the Rome, the oldest national award in the Netherlands for artist under the age of 35. Her prize-winning work shows Ghana from a completely different perspective. Am I really looking at a country from the African continent? The WassinkLundgren team saw their work Empty Bottles awarded best international photo book at the prestigious Rencontres d’Arles photo festival. And advertising agency 180 received a Clio Award for their Adidas print campaign. We will be devoting space to these and other New Dutch Heroes in this issue, in the hope of seeing their works more often.
