Katarzyna Mazur (b. 1987, Poland) takes us into the ring of the Female Fight Club Berlin, a private club of female wrestling that takes place in a rented room. Founded in 2010 by the fighters Anna Konda and Red Devil, it serves as a revival of a tradition that can be dated back to the ’20s, when female wrestling was far more popular than today. While the sport has no guidelines, categories, nor fighting style, it is able to unify all those who participate as fighters and equals.

Shot in black and white, Mazur’s images dull the intensity of scratches and marks on skin into simple contrast; we see the violence but are not distracted with its bloody dis-appeal. Instead, we are allowed to focus on other themes that emerge: sensuous embraces and attacks, an exploration of femininity, the exhaustion and joy on the fighters’ faces, the brute physicality of human contact.
