INTERIORS
CREDITS
Interiors is a selection of vernacular photographs found on the internet and digitally manipulated by London-based photographer Maria Kapajeva (b. 1976, Estonia). In the photos, Russian women copy sexual poses from Western mass media in their homes. While these women tried to stand out, they ironically conform to stereotypes of sexual availability and domesticity by all posing in similar ways. Kapajeva subsequently highlighted the women’s domesticity by literally blending their bodies in with their home environments. Instead of showing the women themselves, Kapajeva covered the women’s skin and hair with patterns from the wallpaper or curtains from the same picture. The result is a ghostly and colourful appearance of female figures in cliché poses.
